(C.2.1) Learning Goal 1:  Define the term "citizen," and identify legal means becoming a U.S. citizen.    (Defina el término "ciudadano" e identifique medios legales para convertirse en ciudadano de los EE UU)
  Learning Targets:
  • Students will define citizenship as stated in the Fourteenth Amendment.
  • Students will describe the process of becoming a naturalized citizen.
  •  Students will evaluate the impact of the naturalization process on society, government, or the political process.
How does naturalization of immigrants affect government?

*Naturalization has allowed millions of immigrants to become U.S. citizens
*Naturalized citizens have the right to vote through the 14th amendment
*More people voting can affect elections
*New citizens can affect government by how they choose to vote.
*New citizens' votes can affect the election of leaders.
*A large number of newly registered voters are naturalized citizens.

Terms to Know:
 Law of blood-the principle that a person's nationality at birth is the same as that of his or her biological mother
Law of soil-the principle that a person's nationality at birth is determined by the territory within which he or she was born.
14th Amendment-defines what it means to be a U.S. citizen and protects certain rights of the people.  The Citizenship Clause gives individuals born in the United States-but especially at that time, African Americans-the rights to citizenship.  All people born in the United States to be U.S. citizens.
